“Traveling at night toward the stars, I thought yet again how very far away they were, and how you could travel your whole lifetime and never reach even the closest one. But even if you knew you couldn’t have something, it didn’t stop you wanting it. I wondered if Kate was to be my star, and I’d spend my life gazing upon her but never reaching her.”
Kenneth Oppel
Airborn kicks off an adventure trilogy as told by Matt Cruse. Matt is a cabin boy aboard the Aurora, a luxury airship. His dream is to one day be the captain of the Aurora, but he needs to save enough money to attend the Airship Academy.
Kate de Vries is a willful, wealthy young woman single-mindedly bent on the pursuit of scientific advancement. She is aboard the Aurora in hopes of locating the unknown flying creatures her grandfather had discovered a year ago before his balloon was damaged and he died. Kate is a complete disruption to Matt's stable life, but soon he finds himself drawn to her and caught up in her adventures.
Skybreaker and Starclimber continue Matt and Kate's adventures together. In Skybreaker they join a crew attempting to salvage an airship, fabled to be carrying a vast amount of treasure that has been missing for forty years. Starclimber sees Matt and Kate as a part of the first crew of aeronauts to breech space.
This is the second time that I read through this serious and they are all thoroughly enjoyable. There is a lot of adventure and some romance and a whole lot of fun!
